I study biodiversity to understand evolutionary, biogeographic, and socio-environmental change. I look for solutions to current environmental challenges.

I am a researcher at the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity in Chile. I serve as coordinator of the BioData team, whose goal is to support biological data integration processes and the development of software infrastructures for calculating indicators of the state and trends of biodiversity.

I am also interested in the scientific study of society-environment relations at global, regional, and local scales, as well as in the modernization of science policy in Chile.

Ongoing Projects

  • Biodiversity Monitoring

I am the Principal Investigator of Fondecyt Regular project 1260845, titled "Spatial Structure of Geographic Ranges in Chilean Vascular Plants: Eco-evolutionary Mechanisms Shaping Their Size, Limits and Internal Structure".

  • HerbarioDigital.cl

In collaboration with the BIODATA team, we are working on the digitization of Chilean herbaria.

  • Machine learning and the global structure of biodiversity

With Diego Arenas from DFKI, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, this project explored biodiversity patterns with support from AI for Earth, Microsoft.
